The Wieliczka Salt Mine

One of the more famous tourist attractions in Poland, the Wieliczka Salt mine is actually a dual purpose facility. People go to the mine first to admire the beauty and art cut into the extensive salt chambers. Secondly they go there to benefit by being exposed to the curative powers of salt ion laden microclimate in the salt chambers below.

The mine is located in Southern Poland just south of Krakow. You can see its location and a map of how to get there by going to this link. Wieliczka Salt Mine

People who go to the Wieliczka Salt mine are treated in a chamber that is 135 meters underground. The chamber, known as the Lake Wessel Chamber is unique for its scenery as well as its microclimate.

The Mine is a world famous health resort and attracts visitors from all over the world.

Therapists at the Wieliczka Salt Mine are particularly focused on treating lower and upper tract respiratory system diseases (infections of nose, sinuses, throat, larynx, asthma, COPD, bronchi diseases), allergies, skin diseases, metabolic disorders (obesity). They use a variety of breathing excercises supplemented by the use of modern physical therapy equipment.

Visitors can also undergo treatments in physiotherapy (magneto therapy, laser therapy, electrotherapy), get massages, dental and cosmetic services.

It was granted an International Certificate ISO 9001:2000 for Quality Management System in Health Protection.

Groups of tourists can visit an underground therapy centre where they learn about the therapeutic properties of the unique microclimate of the salt mine, and the services offered by the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

The mine is cold. Visitors and patients should be ready for a constant temperature of 10 degrees centigrade. Warm clothing and sports shoes are recommended when you go into the mine.
