DAY II - Cracow city tour, a visit to Wieliczka salt mines The Royal Cracow (ca. 3- 4 hours)The Royal Cracow - the city with over a 1000 years history, the seat of the Polish kings for more than five centuries, it still exudes an air of glamour and dignity as you walk along its medieval walls. It is best to visit the historic Old Town by following the traditional route which was always taken by legates to the king. Starting off from Florianska Str. and passing through the Florian Gate you will find yourself within the Old Town's walls. The street you will get to the medieval market square (Europe's largest), where each house around the square has a different history to tell; the medieval trading house occupying the centre of the square now houses souvenir stalls with a rich display of traditional folk craft as well as a collection of the 19th century Polish art. While visiting the Market Square, it is absolutely necessary to visit St. Mary's Church - the 13th-century Cathedral, one of the finest gothic architecture examples, with rich ceiling and wall decorations, magnificent stained-glass windows and Europe's largest three-winged gothic altar .Leaving the market square through Grodzka Street will take you to the castle hill. Wawel, as it is called, witnessed nearly all of the royal coronations and burials in the Polish history. A visit to the royal chambers, the treasury or the castle chapel simply cannot be missed. On your way back to the Old Town it is also worth having a look at the Jagiellonian University (one of Europe's oldest). A visit to Kazimierz district (ca. 2 hours) - the traditional Jewish quarter (occupied by the Jews already from 14/15 centuries until 1939); a visit to its Little Market, the Old Synagogue and the historic streets and houses will make a lasting impression. Tracing Jewish sites you can't miss the famous Schindler's factory, featured in the "Schindler's List" movie. The factory is still partly in use, its different buildings being rented to small businesses, yet sometimes private touring is possible to arrange .A trip to the nearby town of Wieliczka (ca. 20-minute drive) to visit the salt mines (also of medieval origin); some of the underground chambers are enormous, decorated with salt pieces of art (eg. Sculptures) - an unforgettable sight. The salt mines can only be visited on guided tours (a group of ca. 20), the proposed tour (English speaking guide) will start at 5 PM and end by 8 PM .Arriving back in Cracow at around 8:30 PM

DAY III - Zakopane Leaving Cracow at ca. 8:30 AM to arrive in Zakopane at about 10 AM. A walk around the town to see some of the famous 'Zakopane style" wooden villas of the 19th c., a drive to nearby Witów and Chocholów to see typical highlander village architecture (dating back 16th-18th c.), followed by a drive around the town along some scenic routs to admire the Tatra ranges. Optionally, depending on available time and weather, a cable-car ride to Kasprowy Peak (at nearly 2000 m).Returning to Cracow in the evening (ca. 9 PM). DAY IV - Auschwitz, Czestochowa, arrival in Warsaw Leaving Cracow in early morning (around 8 AM), arriving in Auschwitz by 10:00 AM (a ca. 1-hour drive). DAY V - Warsaw The Royal Warsaw (ca. 3 hours) - take a walk along the so called Royal Route; you will see the first part of the Route when moving along Nowy Swiat and Krakowskie Przedmiescie Streets, passing by palaces, churches and the historic Warsaw University campus. You will eventually get to the Royal Castle, visiting the royal chambers with their collection of art and historic furniture. Leaving the Castle you will immediately enter the Old Town with its medieval layout of tiny narrow streets, merchant houses and churches and the magnificent Market Square - now all re-built from scratch after WWII and being one of UNESCO's Worldwide Heritage sites. On the way to Wilanów, a drive through the city centre to view the sites of Warsaw's post-war communist past:- the Palace of Culture and Science - erected in the early 1950's, commissioned by Stalin as "a gift from the Soviet nation" the Palace marks off the very city centre, dominating the skyline with its 231 m tower - the former Communist Party Central Office, now turned into a financial centre - the MDM district was built right after WWII to provide housing for the working classes; the monumental apartment blocks surround a large square which was meant to serve as a community centre .A visit to Wilanów (ca. 2-3 hours), once an out-of town residence, now still practically a suburban district, to see one of the undisputed highlights of Warsaw - the baroque residence of King Sobieski III. Definitely one of Poland's most striking palaces, it is often referred to as "Polish Versailles".The day will close with a tour tracing the Jewish sites (ca. 2-3 hours), as recalled in the famous "The Pianist" movie by Roman Polanski: the remains of the original Ghetto wall in the yard of 55 Sienna Str. and the neighboring hospital building at 60 Sienna Str. (formerly the Jewish children hospital), Umschlagplatz at 10 Stawki Str., where Jewish people were crowded in to be loaded into trains, Chlodna Street (still retaining a pretty much pre-war look and style), which separated the two parts of the Ghetto .During the city tour in Warsaw it is also reccommended to see one of the following documentaries on Warsaw's war-time history:- a documentary on the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, shown at the Warsaw History Museum in the Old Town's Market Square- a documentary on the life and fate of the Jewish Ghetto, shown at the Jewish Historical Institute. Dinner at a local, folk-style restaurant, with traditional Polish cuisine and live folk music and dance performance
