TOUR ITINERARY

DAY I -(Warsaw - ca. 8 hours) - it is ideal to start the tour of Warsaw with a visit to the 30th floor of the Palace of Culture and Science for a magnificent panorama of the city (the views are dizzying and awesome); erected in the early 1950's, commissioned by Stalin as "a gift from the Soviet nation" the Palace marks off the very city centre, dominating the skyline with its 231 m tower. It is bound to impress anyone with its monumental, socialist-era style architecture.- the Royal Warsaw - take a walk along the so called Royal Route; you will see the first part of the Route when walking along Nowy Swiat and Krakowskie Przedmiescie Streets, passing by palaces, churches and the historic Warsaw University campus. You will eventually get to the Royal Castle (a visit to the Royal chambers included) and the Old Town (all re-built from scratch after WWII) - a feast for all history and architecture lovers.- if you're interested in a more recent history, then you will also be guided around the Old Town sites which witnessed the most severe fights during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 (to be followed with a visit to the newly opened Warsaw Uprising Museum)- a visit to Lazienki Park and Palace complex - another site along the Royal Route - will complete the day's tour; the complex was the residence of the last Polish King, serving as a cultural and artistic centre of its time; you can enjoy the quiet of the park (peacocks and squirrels being a regular sight), admire the gems of architecture - a relaxing break from the city in the city.

DAY II - (Warsaw - ca. 8 hours) - starting the tour from the city centre again, you will have a look at some more of the communist-style architecture; the MDM district was built right after WWII to provide housing for the working classes; the monumental blocks surround a large square which was meant to serve as a community centre - weekend dancing, concerts etc. Now it is one of the finest examples of the post-war communist design;another site worth a look is the former Communist Party Central Office, now turned into a financial centre; the building is neighbored by the National Museum - another piece of the post-war modern design; optionally a visit to the Museum's extensive art exhibitions can be included- next you will move on to Wilanów (once an out-of town residence, now still practically a suburban district) to see one of the undisputed highlights of Warsaw - the baroque residence of King Sobieski III. Definitely one of Poland's most striking palaces, it is often referred to as "Polish Versailles"; since only group tours are allowed (so you have to wait for a group of individuals to gather) it may simply be a good idea to view the magnificent facade while having a stroll in the marvellous park.- on your return to the city centre, it will only take a bridge crossing to get to the heart of Praga - once a suburb, now Warsaw's poorest and worst-reputed district; yet Praga can put on a lovely face when you visit Zabkowska Street - finely renovated, with replica's of original shop fronts - a glimpse into Warsaw's 19th century city life; in Praga you will definitely feel time stood still decades, if not hundreds of years ago - all in all a thrilling experience

Warsaw - optional activities for selection instead of sightseeing proposals listed for DAYS I & II - a visit to Citadel - the 19th century Russian fort, - going out of Warsaw - eg. a trip to Zelazowa Wola (Chopin's museum - his former residence)or an open air museum in Sierpc (recreation of a 18th-19th c. village lifestyle)- birdwatching activities - a boat trip down the Vistula river (one of the last Europe's truly wild rivers) and/or a trip to Kampinos National Park (near Warsaw) - the remains of the great forests once surrounding the medieval city

DAY III - Transfer to Cracow via Czestochowa - the trip (a car ride) will take a whole day, leaving from Warsaw in early morning (ca. 7-8 o'clock), arriving in Czestochowa around 10:00 am, leaving for Cracow at around 3 pm and arriving in Cracow in the evening (at ca. 8 pm)- a visit to the Polish Catholics' jewel in the crown - the medieval church and monastery of Jasna Góra, followed by a stroll around the historic market square and the surrounding houses in the Old Town- the ride to Cracow will follow the so called "Trail of the Eagle Nest Castles" - a chain of medieval castles, each located at the very top of once hardly accessible rock or mountain (hence the name) towering over its neighborhod; now most of them in ruins, they still present a picturesque view - definitely worth a few hours driving around and stopping at one or two of them to climb up the steep paths. A visit to a castle and the views will reward every effort - suggested sites at Olsztyn, Bobolice or Pieskowa Skala in Ojcowski National Park.

DAYS IV - VI - touring in and around Cracow - the city with over a 1000 years history, the seat of the Polish kings for more than five centuries, it still exudes an air of glamour and dignity as you walk along its medieval walls. It is best to visit the historic Old Town by following the traditional route which was always taken by legates to the king. Starting off from Florianska Str. and passing through the Florian Gate you will find yourself within the Old Town's walls. A visit to the Czartoryski Museum and its collection of art and armour will give you a good insight into the old Cracow way of living. Back to Florianska Street you will get to the medieval market square (Europe's largest) where you can listen to the bugle call being played at noon; each house around the square has a different history to tell; the medieval trading house occupying the centre of the square now houses souvenir stalls as well as a collection of the 19th century Polish art (visiting included).Leaving the market square through Grodzka Street will take you to the castle hill. Wawel, as it is called, witnessed nearly all of the royal coronations and burial in the Polish history. A visit to the royal chambers, the treasury or the castle chapel simply cannot be missed (visiting included). On your way back to the Old Town it is also worth having a look at the Jagiellonian University (one of Europe's oldest). It is best to spend the rest of the day wandering around the Old Town little streets, popping into numerous galleries, cafes, etc.

While visiting Cracow it is a must to spend a few hours in Kazimierz district - the traditional Jewish quarter (occupied by the Jews already from 14/15 centuries until 1939); a visit to its Little Market, the Old Synagog and the historic streets and houses will make a lasting impression-a visit to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp Museum for Sharon and William Gibson-a visit to Manggha - the Japanese Art and Science Centre for Laurel and Christopher Vogl.

Spending some more time around the Old Town area never get boring - you will always discover something new (a little corner passed-by and unnoticed before, an art gallery, an artist's studio and exhibition, a stylish cafe, etc.)-a trip to the nearby town of Wieliczka and/or Bochnia to visit the salt mines (also of medieval origin); some of the underground chambers are enormous, decorated with salt pieces of art (eg. Sculptures) - an unforgettable sight-a trip to Ojcowski National Park to enjoy a walk along one of its limestone valleys, full of caves and extraordinary shapes that nature carved out in the limestone rocks
