TOUR ITINERARY

ACTIVITIES Setting out from Warsaw in the early morning (at ca. 8:00 AM), heading north.Torun - the city of Copernicus and world-famous gingerbread cakes (ca. 2-hour drive from Warsaw). It was one of the first towns that had been founded by the Teutonic Knights on the Polish territory. Their castle, once in fact a separate town with its own mills, bakeries and fishing ponds, is now in ruins and only the castle tower (the former castle toilet - the so called dansker) remained to this day. Now Torun's Old Town belongs to the UNESCO Worldwide Heritage list - the best of all recommendations. The oldest existing part of the town is its market square with the surrounding streets, whose layout has remained intact for the last 700 years. The tour of the city is best started with a climb to the top of the town hall tower for a magnificent view of the entire Old Town. The town hall itself is worth attention as well. It is one of the biggest medieval town halls in Europe. Its historic interiors can be admired as it now houses a museum with exhibitions related to the city history. Other extraordinary sites are the 13/14th century Leaning Tower (one of three in entire Europe) and the Copernicus House - the astronomer's alleged birthplace (now a museum that recreates the medieval townsman's way of living).Nowadays, Torun also wins its international fame for its gingerbread baking - a 600 year-old tradition. The cakes may come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but always with the same unique and delicious taste. Golub-Dobrzyn - the 14th castle, erected by the Teutonic knights, went under Polish rule a century later. Depending on the time of day and subject to rom availability a stay for the night in the castle chambers will be booked. Alternatively, this day's sightseeing will close at Kwidzyn and a night in a local bed and breakfast in the town's vicinity. Kwidzyn - only two wings are preserved of this great castle. It is worth a stop, though, since its two remaining towers were used, in their time of prime, as Europe's largest medieval lavatory.

DAY II - ACTIVITIES Depending on the previous day's activities, this day's sightseeing will start with a visit to the Kwidzyn castle or setting out for Gniew and Malbork. Gniew - the ideal example of Teutonic architecture Malbork - the jewel in the crown. It is the largest Gothic castle in Europe - designed as the seat of the Great Master of the Teutonic Order. It now houses a museum with exhibitions of armour, art and amber collections. The castle is so complex and huge (nearly a medieval town of its own in fact) that it may take up to ca. 5 hours to visit the whole photocompositionn in one of the buildings is available. On request "the knight's feast" can be ordered at the local restaurant. Traditional menu will be served to the tunes of medievalmusic .Subjectt to rooms availability a night in the Malbork Castle hotel or in a local bed and breakfast will be arranged.

DAY III - ACTIVITIES Setting out from Malbork to Lidzbark Warminski and then on to Olsztyn in the Warmia region, which together with adjoining Mazury is the so called "Land of a 1000 lakes" - a hilly landscape of primeval forests, dotted with clear lakes andrivers. ItIt may be worth stopping on the way to have a look at the Ostroda-Elblag canal - an engineering masterpiece, where ships and boats are transported on trolleys over pieces of land of varying altitude. Alternatively, a boat cruise on the canal can be arranged (lasting a few hours) on Day IV to create a pleasanvariationon from the castle sightseeing. Lidzbark Warminski - 14th century castle, preserved intact, now housing a collection of paintings and art. Olsztyn - the city of 11 lakes and medieval history it uniquely combines a typical sightseeing offer with alternative cycling/hiking/canoeing options. Surrounded by vast forests and 11 lakes right on its outskirts, full of historic monuments going back to the medieval ages, Olsztyn is welcoming destination to everyone, at any time of year. The most prominent in the city is probably its 14th century castle, where, apart from its historic interiors, exhibitions on nature, folk art and astronomy, can be admired. The latter becomes obvious when you think of Copernicus having lived in the very castle for a few years. A walk in the Old Town is also a must and a visit to the old market square, surrounded by 17-18th century houses.

DAY IV - ACTIVITIES Continuing the sightseeing of Olsztyn until lunchtime and then travelling back to Warsaw (a ca. 2.5-hour drive), stopping halfway at Nidzica to visit another of the medieval Teutonic castles. Arriving in Warsaw in the evening (around 9 PM).
