Tour Itinerary
DAY I - Arrival in Cracow, accommodation, sightseeing tour Cracow - the city with over a 1000 years history, the seat of the Polish kings for more than five centuries, it still exudes an air of glamour and dignity as you walk along its medieval walls. It is best to visit the historic Old Town by following the traditional route which was always taken by legates to the king. Starting off from Florianska Str. and passing through the Florian Gate you will find yourself within the Old Town's walls. A visit to the Czartoryski Museum and its collection of art and armour will give you a good insight into the old Cracow way of living. Back to Florianska Street you will get you to the medieval market square (Europe's largest medieval square) where you can listen to the bugle call being played every hour; each house around the square has a different history to tell; the medieval trading house occupying the centre of the square now houses souvenir stalls - worth having a walk around to look at, if not buy, some of the finest Polish handicraft goods .Being in the Square, it is absolutely a must to see the St .Mary's Cathedral - a magnificent piece of 13th c. Gothic architecture. Its three-piece latar (largest Gothic altar in Europe) and rich wall and window decorations will make a stunning impression on a ny visitor. The Square is also the seat of St. Adalbert's church - dating back to 10/11th c.. Its original foundation level is uncovered, so you will get a good idea of how the current street level has risen over the centuries. A visit to the church's basement to see the little archaeological display will also offer an excellent insight into Cracow's medieval way of life. The invisible can be none the less fascinating. There is an enormous complex of underground corridors and chambers (some as large as 1000 sq.m.) stretching under the entire Old Town. These basements have been partly uncovered. A visit to the old Town hall Tower (the only remaining part of the 15/16th c. Town hall) basement - now housing a cafe and a theatre - will present the underground world in its grandest. A moment of rest will make a nice break in the tour. Leaving the Market Square through Grodzka Street will take you to the castle hill. Wawel, as it is called, witnessed nearly all of the royal coronations and burials in the Polish history. A visit to the royal chambers, the treasury or the castle chapel simply cannot be missed (visiting included). On your way back to the Old Town it is also worth having a look at the Jagiellonian University (one of Europe's oldest). While visiting Cracow it is a must to spend a few hours in Kazimierz district - the traditional Jewish quarter (occupied by the Jews already from 14/15th centuries until 1939), full of Synagogues, little shops, etc. The route will take you along the charming streets, with their own character and atmosphere, passing by the synagogues on the way: Temple Synagogue (of 1862), the 17th c. Kupa Synagogue, and Isaac Synagogue; in Józefa Str you will find Cracow's tallest synagogue - the High Synagogue (erected in 1590); the most important site, though, is Szeroka Str with the most precious 15th c. Old Synagogue (Alte Schul) - the oldest Jewish building in Poland (now housing an exhibition on the history and culture of Cracow Jews). Next on you will see Remuh Synagogue (of 1557) with the historic kirkut next to it, dating back to 1511 and finally the Poper Synagogue .Optionally, a visit to Manggha - the Japanese Art and Science Centre - can be reccommended for a refreshing break from the historic pursuits.
