How To Control Spam, Use Spam Blockers and Spam Killers
Spam is a problem for all of us. It is not going to go away. No matter what you do, you will eventually get spam. There is no privacy. For example, banks, large companies and others that you would expect to protect your privacy get you involved in what is called White Collar Spam. And that leads to the typical porn and business opportunity spam. You will get it. It is just a matter of time and a matter of how much.
We get over 500 spam messages per day to just one computer. We can't eliminate it. But we have it controlled. This tutorial tells you how you can control it.
Here is an excerpt from a New York Times Article that gives you one example of how spam gets started. The complete article is at href="http://www.nytimes.com/2003/10/28/technology/28SPAM.html?hp Spam Control.
"Some five years ago, Mr. Rathbun bought a Palm hand-held organizer and, in registering it on Palm's Web site, gave the company an e-mail address he never used for anything else. Initially his in-box received only offers for products related to the organizer, but eventually he started getting advertising from some well-known companies like Bank of America, SBC Communications and Sprint. Lately, that one address alone has been receiving dozens of e-mails a month offering everything from travel clubs to acne remedies."
Spam is a fact of life and all of us have to come to the realization that it is here to stay. And that means that we have to learn how to live with it. To live with it, you must control it or it will overwhelm you.
Take the first step by blocking spam. There are many spam guard programs that you can use to block spam. They can generally be categorized as spam blockers, spam killers, spam eliminators, spam filters, and spam detectors. There are also technical solutions to blocking spam that can be used if you have a little technical savvy.
But knowing which to choose and how to use the various systems to stop spam mail is necessary if you want to effectively get rid of spam. This page gives techniques and information about anti spam solutions that you may use to protect yourself, your business and your children from spam. The goal is to make you spam free. And by making spam less effective, you join us as a spam buster.
When you look for information on the web you must often leave an email address to get that information. But that leaves you open to spam email - even if the company has a strict privacy policy and promises that you will not get spam. If you hate spam email like I hate spam mail, you will be reluctant to leave any email messages anywhere for fear of being put on a spam list.
Beyond that if you have a web site or post to a discussion list, spam email spiders will gather your email address and add it to a spam list.
But if you take a little time, you can easily find a spam remedy. The first step is to block spam before it ever gets to your computer. You can use a free spam blocker or spam stopper to do this. If you have a single email account and want free spam software, it is available.
Here are some examples of spam control procedures and spam elimination programs that you can use to become spam free. The procedures can be as simple as using a free spam filter or other free anti spam software or spam blocking software. Or they can be as complex as purchasing multiple domains to gather sort and filter your email.
But regardless of your level of expertise, you should have your own anti spam program.
If You Are Not Technically Oriented.
First stop spam before it gets to your computer. That is extremely important because many virus are transported in spam. People add spy ware (programs that can monitor your every keystroke) to spam messages.
We use the MailWasher. It is extremely effective and it has saved us a lot of time. It stops most spam before it ever gets to us. We recommend it highly. You can use it on one email account free. Do try this.

Regardless of your spam blocking system, some of it will get through to your computer. Now you set up the filters in your email program. It has filters. You can set up a series of mailboxes with filters to divert suspected spam to a mailbox for later reference. Or you can simply set your filters to trash spam email messages from given addresses.
Setting up anti spam filters is easy. Just go to the help section in your email program and follow the instructions for setting up a filter.
We have found the Eudora email program to be the best spam handler. We also like it because it is generally not affected by all the virus that attack the Microsoft email programs.
You can get Eudora free. They also have an upgrade with a spam handler that diverts spam into a junk mailbox for review. The upgrade costs $49. Download Eudora here.
Our Recommendation
It is safest to stop spam before it gets to your server. Get a free copy of the Mail Washer. Clicking here.

SPAM CONTROL VIA DOMAIN NAME
Whenever you register for anything, or give out your e-mail address on-line (excluding published sources which can be reached by harvesting programs), use an address in the format site name@yourdomain.com, which will be unique to that on-line contact. By default, have this address forward to your normal mailbox.
We've been doing this for the last five years. In that time we've caught about five companies who have sold our supposedly "never sold or shared" contact information. Needless to say, we stopped doing business with them and blocked those addresses. We also helped one company discover their server had been hacked.
How To Do It
1. Purchase a domain and host it at Mid Phase and set the email to receive all variations of email, ie isales@mydomain.com, dude@mydomain.com, anything@mydomain.com etc
2. When you subscribe or order anything online, make the user the name of that which you subscribed to or purchased ie amazon@mydomain.com, walmart@mydomain.com, isurfing@mydomain.com . Then set your my filters so that anything at @mydomain.com goes into a specific folder call "mydomain." Then just review the "mydomain" folder as you wish and act on those items, most of which are emails that you want to see.
3. If you see that something that you signed up for starts selling your specific email address, ie myfreestuff@mydomain.com , just set up another filter so all myfreestuff@mydomain.com goes to trash
SPAM CONTROL VIA SERVER
1. Pair.com, as many other hosts, have installed spam fighting software. I have it automatically insert the phrase **JUNK** in the subject line, before the senders actual subject, if the junk filters predicts it will be spam.
2. Set up a filter that looks for **JUNK** and puts that in a Junk folder. You can then quickly review that folder before deleting. If an email get labeled **JUNK** and it really isn't, you can easily can go to the pair.com control panel and add the email address it came from and tell it not to insert **JUNK** in the subject
3. A tip... When reviewing a Junk folder sort the subject by alphabetical order, you can review just the subject lines, as many times the same subject line is used by several senders, and it speeds the review. Also if you sort by subject you never have to open the email - just look at the topic and delete.
OUR RESULTS
99% of all spam never gets into our in boxes, and if it does, we add a filter, and if something gets kicked out for spam that shouldn't be, we add a filter to allow it to pass through all the above.
ONE MORE THING
Some people think that this seems like a lot of work, it really isn't. But there is some work involved. It may take 3 to 5 hours setting this up for numerous accounts. And you will have to spend 10 or so minutes a week adjusting filters. But each of us saves at least 1 to 2 hours per day no longer having to review so much spam in my in box. Our setup has been a great return on investment, let alone a return on sanity and annoyance level.
And Here Is Something If You Have A Very Large Organization.
Consider defending yourself against spam by using block lists.
If you aren't on a network with your own mail server, ask your ISP about implementing these at their end.
Your mail server can be configured to reject mail from numeric IP addresses that are on one or more block lists provided by third parties.
www.SpamHaus.org (Runs the SBL block list, effective though not as draconian as SPEWS and tends to go a bit soft on some rogue ISPs)
www.Spamcop.net (Spamcop block list - Report spam here. Works by analysing spam reported by users, extremely reliable)
Implementing these block lists can save your employees hundreds of man hours, not to mention reducing the clogging effect of spam on your systems. Spam is increasing at an alarming rate, if you don't take these actions you may soon have difficulty finding your important email in all that spam.
Spam Arrest Systems
Spam arrestors are basically challenge response systems. If someone sends you email, the spam arrest system responds to the email and tells the sender to verify that he sent the email.
If the email is from a person, there is likely to be a response. You can then choose to add that person to your list of friends from whom you will take email.
If the email is automatically generated by a bulk emailer, it will not be answered and you will not see the message. It will be blocked.
You can get information about a spam arrest system here.
What Do You Do Now?
Once you accept the fact that spam, just like junk mail, is here to stay, you should take steps to minimize how it affects you. Start by controlling it. You can do that free.
Then download the free copy of Eudora and set up filters to trash that spam that gets past your spam blocker.Download Eudora here.
