The Mohammed Cartoon Uproar Has Hurt Islam
Today, (3 January, 2005) the Mohammed Cartoons, originally published by a Danish Newspaper, are raging across the internet and the Mohammed Cartoons are now being republished in more newspapers in Europe and the United States.
People and companies that would have either ignored the Mohammed cartoons or passed the Mohammed cartoons off as out of line have been jolted by the violent Muslim reaction and have now come down very hard on the side of the publishers of the Mohammed cartoons.
Freedom of speech is not codified in Europe. But the people expect a certain degree of respect for the rights of others to speak their minds or pursue art as they see fit. The prevailing feeling is that public censure of those who are out of line will keep things fairly well structured.
But the Mohammed cartoon issue has exploded with threats of death and violence. Boycotts are one thing. But threats of death, destruction and declaration of war on Christianity just because some people made some illustrations of Mohammed that may have been offensive to some people are out of line.
The trial of Mohammed Bouyeri, who murdered Van Gogh because he, Van Gogh, ostensibly insulted Islam, is revealing in this matter of the Mohammed Cartoons. To this man, any non believer should be killed. To this man, not only is freedom of speech out of the question, freedom of thought is likewise out of the question. To think on your own means that you should die. More Mohammed Issues
The Mohammed cartoons have given the radical muslims a chance to stir up more hatred. Imams from Denmark have gone to the Middle East and distributed more inflammatory Mohammed cartoons that were not done by the Danish artists. It seems that these radicals made their own Mohammed cartoons that they could use to stir up a lot more hate and discontent.
As the Muslim community comes down harder in support of violence and suppression of publication, the Christian and Secular communities are reacting by publishing the Mohammed cartoons as a way of defining their commitment to free speech. They may not like the Mohammed cartoons. They may not think the Mohammed cartoons should have been published and they may never have even considered looking at the Mohammed cartoons. But once their basic freedoms have been challenged, they are responding on the offensive.
Blogs have been leading a charge in publishing the Mohammed cartoons. And the same time, blog publishers have been searching for other depictions of Mohamed that have been published over the years.
They have also published pictures showing the hypocrisy of the Muslims in their depiction of Christ (See that here. Muslim Cartoon )and general Muslim hypocrisy in what it publishes in cartoons. You can see that Muslim "humor" at Arab Cartoons.
So as a result of the reaction of the extremists, there has not have the Mohammed cartoons received more attention, but likewise the hypocrisy of the Muslim community has been widely exposed.
The violence resulting from the publication of the Mohammed cartoons has created another PR problem for the "Mainstream Muslim Community" that adds to the general PR problem that exists now.
How will that play with non committed Christian and Secular communities against the "Mainstream Muslim Community"? Probably, as a one size fits all solution, these communities will distance themselves more from all Muslims. It will be a never ending circle. The more the Muslims are left out, the more violence there will be and the more violence there is, the more isolated Muslims will become.
