Lech Kaczynski President of Poland
Presidential Election was a runoff for lifestyles.
The presidential election runoff between Lech Kaczynski of the political party PIS and Donald Tusk of the political party PO was an election runoff not as much between two people but between two lifestyles.
Each of the candidates views the Polish people very diffeently. Donald Tusk's view of the Polish people is very positive and he has a lot of faith in the ability of the Polish people to devlop their country. President Lech Kaczynski views the Polish people as a mass of people who cannot care for themselves and who must be directed by a central government which, of course, is run by him.
As it turns out, the young people and educated tended to prefer Donald Tusk. And, the young people failed to turn out for the vote. And, like always, they are complaining that the new President of Poland is not the President of Poland that they want.
Lech Kaczynski pulled his votes from the left. Donald Tusk drew enough votes in the first round to have a higher percentage of the vote than Lech Kaczynski. And during the two week campaign for the vote in the second round, Donald Tusk maintained a consistent, but dwindeling lead over Lech Kaczinski. But when it came to the second round, the people on the left, those who had supported leftist candidates in the first round, for the most part voted for Lech Kaczynski.
Lech Kaczynski, throughout his campaign, touted leftist slogans and programs. Borowski, a loser in the first round presidential vote and leader of the leftist SDPL, commented that it was odd to see someone from the right cloaking himself in leftest ideals. Unfortuneately, he may have mischaracterised Lech Kaczynski because his true ideals have always been leftist ideals and those leftest ideals are the ones that he is even touting after having won the presidential election.
Donal Tusk, on the other hand, pushed the free economic model and pushed for a dynamic Polish economy that would be free of government interference. He called out his faith in the ability of the Polish people, if given a chance to get out from under government regulations, to create a dynamic economy and to make Poland grow.
But the majority of the people who voted went for the protection of the state. Many of those are those who are beneficiaries of state protection now. They are not the young, unemployed and educated who for the most part supported Donald Tusk.
So the country is now run by someone from the old socialist, state run economy school of thought. The young and unemployed who supported Donald Tusk can only reflect on the fact that they did not vote. They talked and did not vote. Now they will learn what it was like during the days of central control and planning.
