Kaczynski What Not Who
Many people are talking about the New President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski. And they are saying that Poland has moved to the right.
It may be that the right is not the right that many people will find to the right. Lech Kaczynski's support actually comes from the left and far left. That is because he is a leftist and not a free market liberal.
Lech Kaczynski's ideas about how Poland should be run are not far from those of the communists who ran the country pre-1989 . His ideas are probably more left than the ex communist politicians that were just moved out of power.
Lech Kaczynski is acutally anti-free market.
Lech Kaczynski is first no doubt a nationalist. He does not like foreigners and he does not like to be around foreigners.
Lech Kaczynski does not like business people.
Lech Kaczynski will "protect the poor".
He will increase maternity leave: paid for by employers, of course.
Lech Kaczynski will increase unemployment protection; paid for by employers, of course.
He has stated that he wants to be able to rule by decree. He will have laws passed to allow him to do this.
He wants to get control of the central bank and to disband the Monetary Policy Board that has so successfully helped the Polish currency.
He wants to fund health services out of the public treasury.
He wants to get involved in running the country more than in paying attention to foreign policy.
He has been described as nothing more than a trouble maker. His past few years have been spent complaining about everyone being corrupt. He did not submit much positively during his period as a member of parliament. For the most part he was simply in opposition and did not provide alternatives.
He shows no diplomatic skills. There is no doubt that as President of Warsaw he has managed to raise the ire of the Russian government. His approach is one of confrontation rather than cooperation.
His approach to the US seems to be that he wants more out of the US in return for the US supporting Poland. If Poland is to support the US, he wants even more out of Poland.
