The Polish Government On Search, Destroy And Total Control
The new Polish government, a minority one, backed by a party that received the votes of less than 20 percent of the Polish population seems more to be interested in searching and destroying than in moving Poland forward.
The Polish government, controlled by the political party, PIS, which is considered to be a party on the right, seems to be focused on destroying anyone that may have differing views. At the same time, they seem to be intent on settling what they consider old scores.
The Polish President Lech Kaczynski has called for a moral revival of the country. The born in Poland, white, Roman Catholic person must be the center of the Poland and the Polish culture. What that means to someone who is not white, not born in Poland or not Roman Catholic remains to be seen.
But if the early attitudes are any indication of what the future holds, it may not be pleasant for one not meeting the Polish standard.
The press is not giving much attention to comments that are coming from different quarters as they see things develop. Take for example this comment that is indicative of the feelings expressed by a growing number of observers.
I do not fear the government ruining the economy or degrading the political scene. I fear it will poison our souls with the hatred oozing from the highest public offices. "Wiktor Osiatynski, professor of law and sociology, constitutional expert.".
The ruling PIS depends to a large part on the support of the "Mohair Brigade". The Mohair Brigade consists of the older women in Poland who are swayed by the radical Roman Catholic Priest who runs the Radio Station "Radio Maria" That station spews venom and hate. It is able to mobilize the Mohair Brigade to protest anything that it considers not in line with its doctrine.
This group is anti-business, anti-foreigner and anti-anyone not Roman Catholic. They are anti-communist, but not anti-socialist. They are socialist.
And the government is pandering to this group to get early support by passing laws that put money in their pockets. As the government is passing laws doling out money, it is gaining support.
And as it gains support it is moving forward consolidating control. That consolidation is causing concern.
For example, "Leader of the opposition leftist Social Democracy Marek Borowski has accused the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) of trying to take control over all state institutions, impose its ideology on the citizens and build a society based on fear. Speaking on Polish Radio One, Borowski said the evidence of this are changes planned in the civil service law and the decision to appoint a politician head of the projected Central Anti-Corruption Office. The former parliamentary speaker claimed that Law and Justice wanted to bring about an early ballot but other parties thwarted this attempt." http://www.radio.com.pl/polonia/article.asp?tId=32076
It is very early in the new government's life, so there is no real track record on which one can build a firm case. But many are worried.
We must wait and see. One can only hope that Poland does not revert back to one party control by a Roman Catholic religious right.
