About Boleslawiec Poland

The City of Boleslawiec was a German City. It was founded under German law in 1251. Its German name was Bunzlau. Boleslawiec passed into Polish territory when the borders of Germany and Poland were redrawn. The name was officially changed from Bunzlau to Boleslawiec shortly after the transfer.

Boleslawiec is famous for its ceramic pottery that is commonly known in the United States as Boleslawiec Polish pottery. Because the original pottery that is now manufactured in Boleslawiec was made by the Germans and called Bunzlau pottery, what is known as Boleslawiec Polish Pottery in the United States is known as Bunzlau Pottery in many parts of Europe.

Boleslawiec has been famous for ceramics and stoneware production since the 16th Century. Today Boleslawiec is one of the most famous ceramics producing cities in the world.

It is located about 200 km from Berlin, 250 km from Prague and 570 km from Warsaw near the lower Silesian forests and on the River Bobr.

Boleslawiec is more than just a Boleslawiec Polish pottery town. It is a City with a beautiful past and one where today you can still see many of the remnants of the past. It is a green town of culture and progress.

The city walls standing today date back to 1479. During the Napoleonic Wars, the walls were badly damaged and the fortifications destroyed. They were rebuilt and today they have become a very popular promenade.
