Polish Computer Owners Will Pay For Radio And TV

Changes to the law governing the Polish National Board of Radio and TV will require that that the public media will be funded not only by money from radio and tv fees but also from fees charged for owing a computer.

The changes are based on an assumption that all households in Poland that have electricity also have the ability to receive radio and tv signals. And the definition of a device which is able to receive the media signals will change. It will include computers.

The spokeswoman for the Board will in the future answer whether a mobile phone and a tablet fall into that category.

With the changed law, people will not have to register their tvs and radios. So far only 50 percent of the households have them registered, whereas 99.9 percent households have electricity.

The proposed changes also state that the state budget will cover the fees of those who are exempt from paying them.

The Board is trying to collect due fees from private households and companies which have radio and tv sets registered. It has an agreement with Polish Post, which has sent a test collection notice to 100 households and 50 companies that are late with payments.
