Polish Air Crash On A Lucky Day For All

Classified Polnews

It was a combination of extraordinary skill and luck that saved the passengers on Polish Lot Airlines Flight 16 that belly landed in Warsaw Poland. The passengers survived because they had ideal conditions.

First they were flying on the Polish Airline Lot which airline has the reputation for having some of the best pilots in the world.

Many of these Polish pilots spend their off time flying sailplanes, or gliders as they are commonly called. Polish sailplane pilots also have the reputation of being some of the best in the world.

Captain Wrona is a sailplane pilot.

His sailplane experience is being given high credit for his ability to land the aircraft so smoothly that the cabin attendants thought that they actually landed with the wheels down.

He was able to touch down at the point on the runway where he would normally have touched down were the aircraft operating properly.

And what is remarkable, is that he was able to maintain control of the aircraft, without steering or braking capability, and guided it down the center of the runway. The maneuver was typical of the maneuver of a sailplane pilot who touches down on a single wheel, maintains attitude so that the after part of the aircraft can be directed through the use of the rudder and directional control maintained. The Captain did this and staid in the center of the runway.

And then the world around the pilot was very cooperative.

The cabin crew was well trained and kept the passengers calm even though they were terrified. Exiting the plane was fast and efficient.

The winds were calm so the pilot did not either have to contend with a crosswind or air turbulence.

And then the emergency occurred on a holiday in Poland.

That was light traffic on the roads so an additional 10 emergency vehicles and fire trucks were able to be called in from Warsaw.

Fifty ambulances were able to make it to the airport to be ready if needed.

The area hospitals were ready to receive injured.

In all, the entire emergency response system worked as far as it was tested. And the passengers are happy that it was not fully tested.

When the plane finally came to rest, within a very few seconds emergency vehicles were on hand spraying flame suppressant foam.

That being said, the man who made it finally work was Captain Wrona.

In Polish, Wrona means crow.

In Poland, it is being said to fly like an eagle and land like a crow.

Here is an amateur video of the landing that is perhaps one of the best that we have seen of flying like an eagle and landing like a crow.

You are also invited to look at a panorama of Warsaw from the Old Town.
