Burial Of Poland's President In Wawel -The Consequences
Classified Polnews
Warsaw, Poland 15 April, 2010 - The decision to intern deceased Polish President Lech Kaczynski in Wawel will have short term as well as long term consequences for the country of Poland and the families of the President and his wife.
In the short term, the decision has immediately opened the wound of political divisiveness. People who were very sympathetic to the continued portrayal of the President being a very warm and compassionate family man and patriot are suddenly voicing negative opinions of him and asking what did he really do.

Some blame him for the decision to fly from Warsaw at 0700 in the morning for a speech in Russia at 0930. Leaving no room for a diversion to another airport essentially forced the pilot to land in totally unsafe conditions. They see that decision as the cause of the death of everyone on the plane.
Public opinion has shifted to the point where demonstrations against his burial in Wawel are already in progress. Demonstrations And there is no public outcry against them. That would not have been the case before the Wawel decision.
The final decision as to the choice of the location. The consequences of that choice are quite significant.
Were the Kaczynski's buried in Warsaw, their grave would probably be visited by thousands of people on every occasion when Polish people visit the cemeteries to light candles and lay flowers. See Polish Cemeteries
But as it is, Wawel is generally a tourist stop. And it is out of the way for families who often travel many kilometers to honor their own. For them to make a special trip to Wawel would take a lot of extra time and effort.
And then even for the families of the President and his wife, they will now have to travel from to Krakow, located at the Southern part of the country from points North.
That is an inconvenience that they may be likely to be more than willing to endure. And whatever their decision, it is not for anyone to criticize. That is a family matter.
But there are already some predicting that once the political effects wear off, the fact that visiting Wawel is likely to curtail visits to the graves of other family members will likely change minds. And these same people wonder whether in the long run the President and his wife will be returned to Warsaw.
