Warsaw, Poland - Uncontrolled Crowds At Presidential Palace
Classified Polnews
Warsaw, Poland 13 April, 2010 - The crowds in Warsaw, Poland on Sunday, the day after Polish President Lech Kaczynski was killed while landing in Smolensk were uncontrolled to the point that it was dangerous for people to approach the Presidential Palace.
There were no police lines, no barriers, no signs and no visible police. There were some boy scouts jammed alongside a lamp post pleading, to no avail, with people to allow those who had paid homage out of the crowd.
Left on their own, thousands of people converged on the Palace from several directions and pushed and shoved their way toward the area where candles and flowers were being laid.
To those who did not note the pressure of the pushing and shoving people until they were deeply ensconced in the melee, their pursuit became dangerous. And particularly so for those with infants in strollers and small children walking with them.
But there were police where the crowds were self disciplined - along the route to be traveled by the convoy carrying the President's body.
By the next day, barriers were erected and police were visible.
Here is a video from inside the Sunday melee.
