Political Gloves Off As Poland's Lech Kaczynski To Be Buried In Wawel
Classified Polnews
Warsaw, Poland 15 April, 2010 - The decision to intern Poland's Lech Kaczynski and his wife in Wawel has prompted some Polish people to remove the political gloves of politeness worn during the first days after the President's death.
The decision is being criticized in many quarters.
Kaczynski has no ties to Krakow and is not, according to what appears to be a majority of the Polish population, a hero of the stature, if a hero at all, that warrants a place for him and his wife in Wawel.
Already there are demonstrations planned against the burial in Wawel.
Some important Polish opinion makers, such as Andrzej Wajdy, the director of the Polish film Katyn, have voiced objection . See Apel Andrzeja Wajdy: Wawel podzieli Polskę
Others see it as a crass political move to foster his brother Jaroslaw's career and coming run for the Presidency.
Speculation had been that the coming elections for a new president would be, out of respect for the dead, laid back and low key.
But now that the deceased President is seen by some as being used as a political tool to help his party in the coming elections, the tenor of the campaign is likely to change more toward the bitter side.
