As Polish Weather Warms, Poland Prepares For Problems

Classified Polnews

Warsaw, Poland 17 February, 2010 - As Polish weather forecasts show temperatures finally going above freezing, building owners are racing against the clock to get snow off roofs and prepare for damage due to leaking roofs while others wait for the coming floods.

Over the next few days, temperatures slightly above freezing and rain will be found over most of the Country.

Building owners who did not clear their roofs after the snows of the past weeks have crews shoveling as fast as they can to get the snow off before the rain adds to the weight on the roofs. Buildings that over the winter used one and two man crews to remove snow are now using up to a dozen people to get the snow off quickly.

The older flat roofed buildings, those built during the days of communist control, generally have a full winter's accumulation laying on them. With frozen gutters and drain pipes, many of them already have water seeping through ceilings and walls. Rain and warm temperatures are expected to compoud the problems until the weather warms enough for the drain pipes to thaw enough to pass water.

Annually the snow melting in the mountains in Southern Poland and Slovakia causes flooding. This year not only are snow accumulations larger than normal in these areas, but there is significant snow accumulation on the ground all over the country, that when melted, will add to the water that will be in the rivers.

The Polish Government has been preparing for floods for some time. See Polish Farmers Caught Between Floodwaters and Looters.

And the people are preparing for their own local problems at the last minute.

The results of their efforts will be seen beginning this week.
