Elderly Polish Women Defrauded By Fake Grandchildren
Warsaw, Poland 8 February, 2010 - Three Polish men were caught waiting for an old lady to give them 15,000PLN in good faith expecting the men, who she thought were her grandchildren, to give the money to her needy daughter.
After admitting to conning elderly citizens into loans they had no intention of paying back, the men were arrested on Saturday.
Police had already received a heads up about the criminals but actually caught up with them by dumb luck.
They were parked in a car near a bank at Plac Inwalidow in Warsaw on Saturday. They were staring at the bank for a long while which raised the suspicions of police officers who were driving by. The cops decided to check them out.
The men had fake IDs in their car and were taken to the local police station for questioning. There, they told police they were waiting on an old lady who was going to give them money.
They said she thought it was a loan for her daughter, that the men were family, but that they didn’t really know each other, and that the loan wasn’t going to be paid back.
The men had conned a number of elderly people in much the same way. It all started with a telephone call:
-Good morning, granny.
-Hello, who is that?
-It’s me, your grandson! Don’t you recognize me?
-Oh, it’s you!
-Yes, granny, its me. How are you feeling, granny, what’s news? You know what, granny, I have a huge favor to ask. Can you loan me a little money?
They admitted that the con had been good for quite a while. Just a few weeks ago they swindled another old lady out of 4000PLN.
At about the same time they tried to trick another old lady, but fortunately her real grandchild interfered, and since then police have been on the lookout.
The men have been charged and face up to 8 years jail.
