Polish bear will live in the lap of luxury in one of Poland’s historical buildings

Warsaw, Poland 8 February, 2010 -Przemisia, the Polish bear who terrorized citizens in south eastern Poland, will move into an elegant new home shortly, but as yet it is unsure which one.
Two main options are a 19th century bear enclosure in a forest in Goluchów that needs some renovation, the other is a castle in Przemyœl, the town in which the bear first terrorized residents who now have a special sentiment towards her.
The bear was christened Przemisia, a clever name combining both the name of the place she was found and the Polish word for Teddy, also a nickname from the traditional Polish girl’s name Przemyslawa.
State Forests want to take care of Przemisia at the Goluchów forest culture centre’s historical bear enclosure.
The 19th century enclosure, which was built by Polish aristocracy, hasn’t been home to any bears since WWII.
Forest rangers said they would quickly renovate the enclosure to meet the bears requirements, including grilling up the entries and installing tap water.
If it is decided the bear can stay for longer a customized bear run will be added to the forest.
But the castle in Przemyœl was also home to wild animals in it’s park during the renaissance, and the city’s crest includes a bear.
The decision will be made by bear experts who will have to test how well each place will house and care for Przemisia.
The bear came to national attention after a very adventurous few days early January.
Przemisia decided she was done hibernating for the winter and demonstrated a preference for civilization than the forest frightening residents at the outskirts of Przemyel in south eastern Poland.
She was once captured and released into the forest but after making her way back into town she was moved to an animal shelter, where she now awaits another move to her future home.
The bear has settled down and is responding well to treatment at the shelter.
“She answers to her name,” her current carer Andrzej Fedaczyñski said.
She’s eating 20kg of fruit, vegetable and meat daily and “she especially, especially likes honey,” he said.
But she shows no intentions of going back to bed.
