Polish Government Cracks Down On Drunk Drivers In Poland

Warsaw, Poland 11 January, 2010 - The Polish Government has put new, heavy penalties in force for drunk drivers in Poland who cause fatal accidents under new 'no tolerance' laws passed in the Polish Sejm last Friday.

The laws specify new fines and penalties for drivers on Poland's roads under the influence as well as the formation of a new Victims Relief and Post-penitentiary Aid Fund.

The new laws mean that any driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs who causes a fatal accident or inflicts grievous bodily harm can have their license permanently withdrawn.

A convicted driver can also face 3 months to 5 years jail if he has a previous related conviction, and a maximum fine of 60,000 PLN that will be paid into the new Fund.

The new Fund is primarily for victims and their families and will assist them in gaining information, advice and legal, psychological and social aid. An important and innovative element of the new system is the employment of "victim carers", volunteers who will be allocated to victims to help as needed.

This new Fund is in itself an innovation. Until now, money from fines was distributed to the health care and environmental systems or directly into the pockets of the victim as compensation.

The laws amended the fifth Penal Code, the executive Penal Code and the Environment Protection Law.

The laws were passed by all parliamentarians, none objected or withheld their vote.
