Polish Airlines React - Poland's Warsaw Airport To Shut Down For Repairs

Warsaw, Poland 14 January 2010 Poland’s main airport, Warsaw’s Okęcie, may be closed during three consecutive weekends in September for renovations. The Polish airlines have never heard of such a thing.

Two runways, which form an X shape, are in need of repair at their intersection.

“We have to pour out thousands of square meters of concrete,” said Kamil Wnuk for the airport’s owners.

“Closing the airport for the weekend is the only way for all that material to set”.

“There’s got to be a different way to work this out. After all, many European airports have intersecting runways, but I’ve never heard of the complete shutdown of an airport for renovation. We hope this isn’t a final decision,” LOT airways spokesman Andrzej Kozłowski said.

LOT will have to cancel their flights, but cheap airlines WizzAir are already planning adjustments to cope with this worst case scenario.

Wnuk said the work was specially planned for September, when holiday travel slows down and mid-week business flights generally pick up.

Renovations are currently planned for September 4-5, 11-12 and 18-19. As many as 170, 000 passengers may be inconvenienced if repairs go ahead.
