Polish Construction Companies Welcome Workers Back From Ireland.

Warsaw, Poland - 24 February, 2009   Polish construction companies report that people who left for Ireland to work there are coming back to Poland in droves. Then return has been a boon to companies that were struggling to find qualified help.

The year 2007 was a difficult year for contractors in Poland. Anyone who could swing a hammer, lured by high pay and better living conditions, left for the West with many of them going to Ireland.

To survive, Polish contractors hired anyone who could do more than see lightning and hear thunder. Quality suffered. And once these people got a little training and knew how to swing a hammer without hurting themselves, they left for the West as well.

But now the people are returning to Poland with them they bring new skills and attitudes.

Many of the people who went to Ireland attempted to start their own businesses and in the process learned what a business owner goes through in order to survive.

Business owners report that the attention to quality and teamwork exhibited by these returnees is a welcome change from the norm of 2007.

Contractors report that the returnees appreciate work more and contractors have been able to build stable work crews who know each other and tend to work well together. Some of these work crews have become so cohesive that it is difficult for new additions to be accepted by the established crews.

Because some of the newcomers are unwilling to work hard to prove themselves, particularly if they do not have foreign experience and do not share the values of the returnees, turnover among new additions is reportedly higher than it has been in the past.

The upside for Poland is, of course, an increase in the quality of work done.

Whether the advantages of having these people back in Poland offsets the advantages of them working abroad and sending money back to Poland, which money was used in large part to drive the Polish economy, remains to be seen.
