Polish Déjà vu - Abandoning Poland to the Russian sphere of influence.

Warsaw, Poland - 25 November, 2008   Russia's threats to place missiles on Poland's borders seem to be having some effect on Western European powers. And it seems that there is less support for placing the missile defense system on Polish soil, the result of which would be an acknowledgment that Poland is within Russia's sphere of influence.

The US missile defense system in Poland is of indefinite value as to defending against missiles. The missiles are unproven.

The Russian's admitted long ago that it poses no military threat to them.

"While some Russians are crying foul and making threats, others are more honest about the situation. On March 2, Russian Air Force Commander in Chief Colonel General Vladimir Mikhailov said that the possible deployment of a U.S. radar site in the Caucasus is of no real concern to Russia, RIA Novosti and ITAR-TASS reported. "We have everything necessary in order to respond appropriately to such deployments. They have lots of money, so let them spend it," he said. But the base on which the unproven missiles will be placed has a definite value as to fixing the border of the Russian sphere of influence.

The placement of a US missile base in Russia's near abroad is not only humiliating to Russia but tells Russia that Poland is firmly in the Western camp and are not to be intimidated as have Georgia and Ukraine.

European Union countries, with Germany of particular note, because of economic and energy reasons, are not interested in antagonizing Russia. So they have been content to leave the issue of defense up to the United States.

With the Obama administration comes his promise to cut funding for unproven missile defense systems. Obama's stated priorities are on YouTube at Obama Priorities And priorities of those around him are outlined here:

Caucus4Priorities.org, also called Caucus for Priorities, was a campaign of Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities (BLSP), which is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

It describes its mission as follows: "To change US budget priorities to reflect a national commitment to education, healthcare, energy independence, job training and deficit reduction - at no additional taxpayer expense - by eliminating funding for unneeded Cold War era weapons systems."

And the specific campaign, Caucus for Priorities, describes its mission as follows: "To redirect 15% of the Pentagon's discretionary budget away from obsolete Cold War weapons towards education, healthcare, job training, alternative energy development, world hunger, deficit reduction." And with his administrations proposed spending plans in mind, it might be that he may now even be more interested in cutting missile defense funding. And since he has said he will not deploy unproven missile systems, the base in Poland will not be built.

Plus he would have support from powerful people in the United States Senate

Warsaw, Poland - 5 June, 2008 The third ranking Democrat in the United States Senate has proposed to gain Russian cooperation on Iran by canceling the proposed Polish missile defense system and allowing Russia to restore hegemony over Poland plus the remainder of Eastern Europe. His proposal includes the dismantling of the antimissile site and economic incentives in the creation of a diplomatic partnership in the region in exchange for Russia joining the economic boycott of Iran. Cancel Polish missile defense system. Turn Poland back to Russia - American Senator

To move matters along, Vladimir Putin is offering a solution and slowly isolating Poland.

If the new administration of US president-elect Barack Obama drops deployment plans for a missile shield in what Russia considers to be within its sphere of influence, then "questions of our retaliatory measures will disappear by themselves," Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told journalists at a forum in St Petersburg on Monday, Nov. 24. Putins Offer

Putin gives the European's a reason to tell Poland that it is in Poland's best interest to not have Russian missiles on its borders. And he gives the Obama administration a way to talk about change and improvement of America's image in the world. And convenient to everyone, all past misunderstandings and tensions can be blamed on George Bush.

So in the end, Poland can end up abandoned by the United States and reliant on a weak NATO and European Powers that have a historical record of not coming to Poland's defense - even when defense treaties existed.

The US abandonment of fixing the border will be seen by Russia that Poland is in the Russian sphere of influence.

Once again Poland will be the abandoned pawn in the game of Europe.
