Polish Businesses Prepare For Postal Strike in Poland

Warsaw, Poland - 18 April, 2008  Poland's postal letter carriers have announced their intention to go on strike. The initial strike date was set for this coming Monday. But, so that they do not lose support of the Polish public, they will delay it until May 5 thereby allowing people to post their tax returns.

The letter carriers are demanding a retroactive pay increase of 700 zloty effective 1 January, 2008.

The Post Office is offering 500 zloty effective the date agreement is reached.

The Polish Post has had its problems. During the Christmas season, mail was delayed weeks as the system became sorely overloaded due to a shortage of letter carriers and mail sorters. See Poland's Post Office Still Delivering Mail For Polish Christmas Past

Post Office Management said that it must raise rates to compensate for pay increases. Thy have already filed an application to the office of Electronic Communication.

Unofficial information is that a letter will cost 10 grosz more to put into the mail.

During the Christmas slowdown, businesses lost sales because they could not get products delivered on time.

Courier services were also overloaded and they generally refused to take parcels from anyone who did not have a previously existing contract.

Polish business can look forward to more difficulties again as they look forward to not being able to rely on the mail.

Internet stores and auction sites will be effected. The main Polish internet auction site, Allegro is advising sellers to use couriers.

The Courts will not be able to function because they will not be able to deliver notices which are normally delivered by registered mail.

The Post Offices will shut down and will not pay out monthly pensions for ZUS.

Since half of the people who get pensions do not have bank accounts into which monthly payments can be made, ZUS will open its regular offices to make payments.

The Confederation of Polish Employers has notified the Prosecutor of a crime committed by the labor union Solidarnosc. It is claimed that the union decided to strike even before negotiations about pay raises started.

A private postal service, Inpost that now delivers 2.5 million piece per year expects to see its business triple. The Polish Post delivers 4 billion per year
