Warsaw, Poland 5 November, 2007 The Polish President's office, reacting to news reporters that the President would not designate Donald Tusk as Prime Minister before 11 November, has announced that it plans to appoint Tusk this week and that he will be invited to all events on 11 November.
The announcement was made by spokesman Michal Kaminski at a press conference. His comment that Tusk would be invited to all events on 11 November signaled that the President's office was concerned about the effect of the continuing talk about the President's reaction to his brother's election loss to Tusk and perceived insults. The announcement by Kaminski that the President plans to appoint Donald Tusk as Prime Minister this week comes as a surprise after all the signals that have been coming out of the Law and Justice Party indicating that there would be would be delays in the appointment.
Kaminski added that the President does not desire to engineer the makeup of the new government. That may signal a change in the direction of the battle over Tusk's intention to designate Radek Sikorsi as the foreign minister. Polland's Exiting Government Attacks Ex Polish Minister Of Defense
Kaminski also announced that the president intends to me with all the important leaders and of the new Polish parliament on Tuesday. http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/Wiadomosci/1,80269,4643659.html Kaminski: Prezydent planuje desygnowac Tuska w tym tygodniu
Yesterday evening there was a contentious meeting of the Law and Justice Party. It is being reported that there are cracks in party unity. There are those who want to make party decisions more democratic and others who want Kaczynski to continue in the domination role. Even though Jaroslaw Kaczynski and his group apparently came out on top of the discussion, it is reported today some senior people, Ludwik Dorn, Kazimierz Ujazdowski i Pawel Zalewski resigned from positions as vice presidents of the party. They gave Kaczynski a letter with their proposals of changes, but Kaczynski reacted in a way that they could not agree with so they resigned http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/Wiadomosci/1,80269,4643744.html Dorn, Ujazdowski i Zalewski zrezygnowali z funkcji wiceszefów PiS
Pressures from within the party may have made it important for Kaczynski to focus on keeping the party together rather than starting new fights. With a party that may be crumbling, Kaczysnki might not consider it wise to force new elections. So a quick change of approach may have been necessary.
Kaminski only announced a plan to appoint Tusk. He did not announce a date.
