Poland's Countryside Will Triumph In Polish Elections
Warsaw, Poland 8 October, 2007 Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski has the support of the people in Poland who will vote. And because the people who don't support him are those who don't vote, Kaczynski will not only win in the next elections, he is likely to win an absolute majority in the Polish Parliament.
Kaczynski, waiving the Polish flag and supporting the Polish Catholic Church, is campaigning against the rich, the privileged, the elite, the corrupt, big business, the communists. And this resonates with his base - the old and small farmers in rural Poland. They have generally been left out of the benefits of the transition from the old centrally planned economy to the system that exists now.
And he has their attention. Their support for him is unwavering. Regardless of what he says or does, they stay with him.
Kaczynski is using every tool available to turn these people out to vote.
(Recently) (t)he prime minister raised more eyebrows by teaming-up with the controversial religious radio station Radio Maryja, run by Redemptorist priest Father Tadeusz Rydzyk. Kaczynski recently praised the station which sways considerable influence among the rural elderly as a great PiS ally in efforts to cleanse Poland of corruption and wrongdoing.
Radio Maryja and particularly Father Rydzyk are known for their anti-Semitic and xenophobic views, but appear not to be subject to standard legal sanctions for making such comments publicly in Radio Maryja broadcasts.
Journalist slams Kaczynski party as threat to democracy
Kaczynski has little support among the young. He is generally an embarrassment to many. "It is a fact that young Poles would like to live in a normal, tolerant European state. They feel embarrassed by the political scene,' said Marek Migalski, an analyst from the Silesia University. Youth vote looks lost for Poland's ruling twins
But such embarrassment will not necessarily translate into a vote for the opposition. It is more likely to translate into no vote at all. "... young Poles are less likely to vote. Overall turnout was only 40 percent at the last election in 2005 and younger voters were big abstainers. Youth vote looks lost for Poland's ruling twins
The political polls probably show the electoral race closer than it probably really is. They do not include information about who will really vote. They only indicate who the people prefer.
Kaczynski can depend on Rydzyk, and possibly many of the rural churches to get the voters out for him. And he knows that even if the young would rather see him lose the election, they probably will do nothing about it.
Kaczynski came to power during the last elections on a low voter turnout. He won with the votes of about 10 percent of the people of Poland. It is likely that that will happen again.
