Poland's Prime Minister Used Polish TV For Political Propaganda - Civic Platform
Warsaw, Poland 6 September, 2007 On Saturday Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski gave a speech on Polish Television in which he asked the young people of Poland to vote in the coming elections. And he added that he wanted them to vote for his party.
The Civic Platform is objecting to the Prime Minister using Public Television to broadcast a speech as Prime Minister that is really a political advertisement for his party Law And Justice. They are calling what he said "political propaganda."
Iwona Sledzinska Head of the Polish Parliaments Culture And Media Committee, Civic Platform, sent a letter to the Radio And Television Board demanding an explanation for the actions taken by the Prime Minister and his party in the use of the Polish Television for their own political purposes. She emphasized that The Radio And Television board should take special note of the Prime Minister's speech on Saturday.
Spokesman for the Law And Justice Party called the complaints "political hypocrisy" since prime ministers all over the world engage in politics.
Polish Public Television is under the control of a Kaczynski appointee, Andrzej Urbanski, who is claimed by some journalists at TVP to have exercised control of what news is aired and that coverage favors the Law And Justice Party.
