Poland A Totalitarian Country - Discharged Polish Interior Minister
Warsaw, Poland 10 August, 2007 Poland's newly discharged Interior Minister Janusz Kaczmarek has lashed out at the Polish Government and charged that Poland is now a totalitarian country. In a brief of an interview that is to be published tomorrow in the Polish Daily Gazeta Wyborcza, he makes claims that show much wider Government use of police powers than are generally known.
Having been discharged for some publicly unstated involvement in a leak of information that allowed Samoobrona party leader Andrzej Lepper to avoid entrapment in a land zoning case, Kaczmarek is going on the offensive.
It appears the super secret operation against Lepper was not so secret. According to Kaczmarek, some of Ziobro's deputy ministers knew of the secret operation against Lepper. And Deputy Prime Minister Przemyslaw Gosiewski, who has previously denied any knowledge, knew as well as some journalists.
Of his former boss, Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro, he says that Ziobro is waging a private war against him to cover his own involvement in the leak. He wrote an open letter to Ziobro that was challenge to come out with the truth.
The timing of his discharge has raised questions. Kaczmarek was discharged while on vacation. He says that he met Prime Minister Kaczynski just before he went on vacation and nothing was mentioned. And "They waited for me to go away on holiday before starting this whole campaign."
After Kaczmarek went on vacation, Kaczynski moved quickly. He told his brother, President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, to come back from his own vacation to dismiss Kaczmarek, which his brother dutifully did.
The campaign against Kaczmarek apparently involved detailed monitoring of everything he did.
His son, a computer buff, had found that their emails were being intercepted and read. That lead them to believe that their phones may have been also monitored.
And they noted cars from the Anti Corruption Office parked near their residence. He is not sure if they used listening devices from the cars. There is no information about whether the secret listening devices in mini-helicopters were used against him like they were in the Lepper operation.
He says that there are other ongoing operations, similar to the ones launched against Andrej Lepper, targeting other Government Ministers .
Kaczmarek is a trusted police insider who appears quite willing to take anyone down in order to defend himself. The information that will first be seen in full tomorrow, if it is not leaked today, promises to get a lot of attention.
