Poland Now World Of Orwell - Former Polish Prime Minister
Warsaw, Poland 30 August, 2007 "We live in the world of Orwell's 1984 and it is worth being aware of it," according to Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, Polish Prime Minister once removed. And as more leaks about secret testimony reveal widespread eavesdropping and spying by Poland's Government, the public is becoming aware, and concerned.
Poland is embarked on a very aggressive fight against Government and business corruption. Its Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) has extensive powers for gathering information about which you should be aware.
The CBA uses the powers of Poland secret services, public prosecutors and police to spy on people and arrest them if they think that those people may be involved in suspicious activities. The CBA reports directly to the Prime Minister and its chief serves at his pleasure. The information gathering activities of the Anti-Corruption Bureau are done without judicial oversight.
Any office you enter and any telephone you call or use may be bugged. Highly sophisticated eavesdropping equipment may be used to record anything you utter. Your mail can be intercepted, opened and read.
CBA agents can gather personal information about you and keep it on file as long as they wish and use it for whatever they think appropriate in their fight against corruption.
The CBA is well funded and uses the most advanced technology. For example, it was revealed that during the CBA's attempt to entrap the former Minister of Agriculture Andrzej Lepper, a remotely controlled mini helicopter equipped with listening devices was used.
With equipment like that, you can easily be recorded sitting in a park.
Even if you are meeting with a private businessman, you may be taped. In a famous case in Poland, a politician, who was reportedly drunk, was taped, ostensibly by the businessman's security guards, and the tape ended up being made public. There are no clear details as to why he was taped and how or why the tape managed to get out to the public.
You might be taped talking to Government officials or taped as you just happen to be talking to someone who happens to be being monitored.
They can get your telephone billing records, financial records and anything else.
There is no way to safeguard your corporate secrets from them and there is no way to prevent a rouge agent from using any information to his own benefit. As the Parliament Secret Services Committee continues on its examination of what Kaczmarek alleges, there may be more to say on the topic.
But as it stands now, whoever you are, and wherever you are, anything you say, anything you write and anything you do may be monitored by Government agents.
This is the Fourth Republic of Poland and it is determined to continue on its path to a "Moral Revolution" and fight against corruption. It is doing what it thinks it has to do.
