Poland's Government Silences Witnesses In Polish Watergate Scandal

Warsaw, Poland 30 August, 2007 In a move that will prevent Poland's Former Interior Minister and Former Chief of Police from testifying before the Polish Parliamentary Secret Services Committee tomorrow, the Polish Internal Security Agency arrested both this morning.

Kaczmarek has been in the headlines over his testimony regarding Government Spying. (Poland's Former Interior Minister Details Polish Government Political Spying ) His testimony was explosive enough to shut down the Polish Parliament (Poland's Political Eavesdropping Scandal Shuts Down Polish Parliament) until after Former Chief of Police Konrad Korniatowski testified tomorrow.

The reason for the arrest is stated as best we can translate it, hindering the procedural process. That seems to involve hindering the flow of information or cases to Polish prosecutors.

Gazeta Wyborcza found out about Kaczmarek's arrest from an independent TV journalist at whose house he was spending the night. A friend of Kornatowski reported that he was arrested.

According to Polish Television TVN24, part of Kaczmarek's arrest was recorded on a mobil phone camera.

Now he is in the custody of ABW and he will be taken to the prosecutor.

A radio station called Kaczmarek and he said that he had been arrested and hung up.

According to Civic Platform Party MP Marek Biernacki, a member of the Parliamentary Secret Services Committee, both arrested persons will not be able to testify tomorrow which means that witnesses are being silenced the day before the committee meeting.

ABW press office did not want to comment. They told Gazeta to contact the prosecutor.
