Polish Doctors Strike Forces Evacuation Of Hospital In Warsaw, Poland
Warsaw, Poland 1 July, 2007 With the entire staff of Doctors at the hospital on ul. Barskiej in Warsaw, Poland on a hunger strike, patients were evacuated to other hospitals that could provide adequate care. The move could jeopardize the support by the Polish population for the plight of the doctors and nurses.
At the same time, striking nurses who are camped out in front of the Prime Minister's Chancellery at "White City", have been giving free examinations to anyone who drops by. Four nurses continue on a hunger strike.
The strikes by the doctors and nurses show no signs of abating. The Prime Minister, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, in his typical style, is taking a hard line, "my way or no way" approach to setting the strikes. And that is only making matters worse as the doctors and nurses dig in their heels to resist him and push for their demands to be met.
Perhaps there are reasons for the Prime Minister to be approaching the strikes as he is. The Prime Minister seems to think that there are supernatural powers working against him. In a remark that made news headlines on Polish television and in the press, at a meeting of his party on Saturday, he said that "There are devils out there that are trying to hurt what we are doing." http://www.zw.com.pl/zw2/index.jsp?place=Lead04&news_cat_id=16&news_id=162519&layout=1&forum_id=38485&page=text" Premier: Polsce szkodza szatani
Meanwhile other members of the Polish Government are talking with the doctors and nurses. The Minister of Health, Zbigniew Religa, just returned from convalescent leave after surgery for lung cancer, is maintaining an open dialog with all the parties.
Andrzej Lepper, leader of the Government Coalition Party Samoobrona, said that there will be 6 billion more zloty available for the doctors and nurses next year.
The evacuation of the hospital at ul. Barskiej was not well received by either the families of the patients or the general public. Commentators have remarked that the striking medical workers will lose support if they see people needing care in the hospitals becoming victims of a hunger strike.
But support within the health care sector is growing. Anesthesiologists have announced that they will join the striking doctors and nurses on Monday.
