Poland's Capital Tied Up As Polish Drivers Ignore Bus Lanes
Classified Polnews
Warsaw, Poland June 19, 2007 Traffic in Poland's Capital City, Warsaw, is tied up due to upgrading the public tram system. Alternate traffic measures put in place by the City have not helped alleviate the problems since the Polish drivers have ignored the new rules.
The first stage of the upgrade of the tram system concerns the tracks through the main road in the center of Warsaw, Al. Jerozolimskie, running from the region of the Sobieski Hotel across the Poniatowski Bridge to Rondo Waszyngtona in Praga. The upgrade of that section is planned to take four months.
The traffic lanes through the center of the city have been adjusted so that there is now single lane for passenger cars and a single lane that is supposed to be used exclusively by buses.
Passenger cars, however, have been using the bus lanes and have, as a result, tied up bus traffic as well as the passenger car traffic. The police have not been efficient in enforcing rules to allow the buses to freely flow in the bus lanes.
The traffic tieups have affected traffic throughout the Warsaw region. There has been a spill over effect and traffic jams exist in Praga as well as all the other streets in Warsaw.
Though the upgrade on Jerozolimskie is expected to be finished in four months, it will be followed with other upgrades on tracks on the other main streets of Warsaw. (al. Niepodleglosci – Chalubinskiego – al. Jana Pawla II) It is projected that drivers in Warsaw will be subjected to traffic jams for at least the next year and possibly more. With passenger car drivers tying up the bus lanes so that public transportation system is unable to help alleviate the problem by giving people an alternate way of getting into the city, the impact on the city is significant.
