Poland's Speaker Of Parliament, Humiliated By Little Girls With Microphones, To Impose Polish Press Caste System
Warsaw, Poland 8 May, 2007 The Polish press corps will be divided into three classes and limits on access to Poland's politicians in the Polish Parliament placed on them.
Ludwik Dorn, Speaker of the Parliament, was beseiged by reporters who were reacting to the announcement that they would be graded as patrician, equestrian, and plebian.
Dorn allowed as how it was humiliating for him to have to respond to questions asked of him by little girls with microphones. He added that incidents like the one in which a reporter was knocked down by the Prime Minister's bodyguards could be avoided by limiting access of the press. As it stands now, getting access to wander the halls of the Polish Parliament buiding is a simple matter of proving that one is a journalist. There are no briefing rooms and no facilities set aside for the press. Politicians are fair game for questions anywhere in the halls.
Dorn pointed out that the press is not given unlimited access to pariliament buildings in other countries and Poland should be no different.
Reporters reacted to the Roman caste system being used as a model. It reeked to some of people like Dorn, who are supported now by less than 20% of the Polish population and who stay in office only by staying in coaltion with criminals and people of the fringes of society, thinking that they belong to some emporer class.
The Polish Government has had a rocky relationship with the press in Poland.
It began by announcing that there were reliable media and unreliable media.
It removed the head of Polish television because he was too independent.
It passed a law requiring the lustration of journalists.
Opposition party leader Wojciech Olejniczak of the SLD said that a caste system is not necessary. It would only be necessary to provide facilities where the press could meet politicians.
