Polish Government Attempts To Delay Ruling By Poland's Supreme Court
Warsaw, Poland 10 May 2007 Poland's Constitutional Tribunal is hearing arguments on the controversial Polish vetting law with the intent of issuing a ruling before 15 May, 2007, the deadline for filing vetting statements. The Polish Government, in an attempt to delay the arguments past the deadline, submitted two motions to the Tribunal, both of which were denied by the Court.

The first motion asked for the removal of four judges from the case. It was argued that some out of court statements made by these judges prior to the arguments being heard showed that they were biased.
The Tribunal curtly denied the motion.
In the second motion, the Speaker of the Polish Parliament, Ludwik Dorn, requested a delay past the 15 May deadline for filing lustration statements because he said that he did not have time to review the file.
The Tribunal responded by saying that if the Parliament could pass 72 amendments to laws in one day, he could read 200 pages of file in one night.
Ryszard Kalisz, lawyer for the complaining party SLD, said that 95% of the people required to file a lustration statement had not and were waiting for the verdict of the court.
The Court has previously indicated that it expected to rule by Friday.
President Kaczynski reacted quickly to the Court's ruling on the motions.
He criticised it for ruling with "exceptional haste".
And he warned the Court that if it found the law unconstitutional he would see to the drafting of a new law that opened the secret files to the public. He added that the new law would be more "brutal" than the current law.
Some 700,000 people total are expected to be required to file lustration statements. Processing their files may take ten to fifteen years.
