Poland's Euro 2012 Effort Can Fail Because There Are No Polish Workers Left
Warsaw, Poland 19 April 2007 Poland is currently suffering from a general labor shortage. And the Polish construction industry has a particular problem with most companies reporting that they cannot hire enough workers now. With the huge increase in work that is needed to support Euro 2012, the problem will get worse. And unless things change, Poland will not be able to support Euro 2012.
The Polish road system cannot support fast travel between the cities of Poland no less travel to and from Ukraine. Roads are being built now but not enough are scheduled to be completed to support Euro 2012.
The Polish railroads serve the country better than the roads, but they are sorely inadequate when it comes to being able to support the crowds. And the railroads are currently are suffering from a labor shortage with employees of an average age over 50. Young people are just not hiring on to replace the older generation.
And, of course, the stadiums will be built, hotels, restaurants and more.
Underlying this is all the support structure that will be needed.
The task is huge. And the requirement for workers is huge.
But the workers have left the country. And they are not going to come back unless it pays them to come back. That means more money as well as better living conditions.
And even if the pay is higher, how many of the people will come back? They may have made new lives with which they are perfectly satisfied.
Of course the many in the UK who work for less than the minimum wage because of the registration laws may be enticed back. But that will probably not be enough to even support the current demand no less the increased demand in labor.
Pay has already risen 9% over the past year but the workers continue to leave the country. Polish wages up over 9%
And it is the workers leaving that is driving up the wages. http://www.cbw.cz/phprs/2007041606.html Lack of skilled labor driving up wages
How much more must pay go up to just stop the exodus no less reverse it?
Five years does not give Poland much time to complete all the work. It must make its move now or the companies will be ready to go to work but not be able to perform.
The Government faces a choice of importing workers or watching wages spiral as companies raise pay scales to attract people.
To date it has chosen to import workers legally and to ignore those, such as the estimated 150,000 Ukrainians, working in Poland illegally.
The Government has made some small moves to allow more Ukrainians and others in to the country on a temporary basis. But the limit is for three months. That is not going to help the construction industry. http://www.polskieradio.pl/zagranica/gb/dokument.aspx?iid=50803 Change in work law
The Government has been focused on destroying the past, fighting over abortion and new election threats and not making serious efforts to stop the labor drain that has actually worked to its benefit as it has reduced unemployment and the Polish expatriates send money back to Poland.

But now it must act to get labor into the country or it will fail to meet its obligations to Euro 2012.
