Poland: Questioning Deputy Prime Minister's Pressure On Polish Government And Constitutional Tribunal?
Warsaw, Poland 11 March, 2007 Poland's Deputy Prime Minster Andrzej Lepper has formed a new political party to replace his that now is part of the Polish Coalition Government. In a press conference that has been taken as an attempt to either pressure the Polish Government or the Constitutional Tribunal, he said that if the Court rules against him, within two days he would be out of the Government and new elections would have to be held.
The Court is expected to render its opinion on Lepper's use of Promissory Notes that members of his party were required to sign as a condition to be on the election list. They are used to keep party members in line.
Lepper is apparently concerned that the Court will rule against him, and, as a result, members of his party would lose their mandates as elected members of the Polish Parliament.
Without Lepper's party members as part of the Polish Parliament, the ruling Kaczynski Government would not have enough votes to withstand the opposition's attempts to bring the Government down.

The former head of the Court said that the fact that the Party did something illegal does not result in the automatic loss of Parliamentary membership for party members.
Commentators are questioning Lepper's move. What is he up to? Why is is playing the grandstands again?
Is he trying to put pressure on the Constitutional Court?
Is he trying to put pressure on the Government to put pressure on the Constitutional Court?
Is he just putting pressure on the Polish Government to get something more than he has already gotten?
