Poland's Malysz Loses To The Wind And Sets Back Polish Hopes

Classified Polnews

Warsaw, Poland 19 March, 2007   Poland's Adam Malysz put the hearts of the Polish people in their throats as he fought a bad wind gust and had to forget competing while he put all his effort into landing safely.

The wind conditions were deteriorating toward the end of the first series of jumps on Sunday in Oslo. As Malysz waited at the top of the ramp, the TV commentator remarked that conditions were not at all good.

And the Poles in the crowd waived their signs, "The King is Back!"

As he left the end of the ramp a gust of wind hit him and Malysz was close to losing control. But he worked his body and skis and was able to land safely, albeit with a jump of only 89 meters.

He did not qualify for the second series of jumps. And, as a result, dropped to second place in the world cup events.

Malysz said that it was not only the wind's fault. He said that he lifted his left ski to much to compensate for the wind and that after that he had to concentrate on landing safely.

His former trainer Apoloniusz Tajner said that any other skier would have not been able to recover and would have likely been injured.

The new point leader, Andrea Jacobsen, a determined competitor, said that it was nice to be the leader again, but that "this is not the way to win."

There are three more events that will determine the final results.
