Polish Electronic Media Are Creations Of Communist Poland

Warsaw, Poland 9 March, 2007  The battle lines are being hardened as Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said that the worst elements of the PRL created the electronic media of the Third Republic of Poland.

Little more than a week ago the Polish Government, in a much criticised move, replaced the head of the Polish Government Controlled Public Television reportedly because he was too independent. He was replaced by the Head of the Chancellery of the President of Poland. See The Changes At Polish Television Criticised By Insiders And Outsiders

As of 15 March, 2007, journalists born before 1972 must comply with the new Polish vetting law and get proof that they did not cooperate with the Secret Services. This is a wide ranging law that even covers blogs run by foreigners and those who comment on the blogs. See http://www.threemonkeysonline.com/blogs/grodsk/archives/000709.php The Chill

Kaczynski also said that were it up to him every private service would have to publish everyday information about its background.

The Polish Federation of Employers, whose members include the owners of Polish Television stations TVN and Polsat and Radio Zet protested against the Prime Minister's statement. They wrote that his statements are untrue and offensive the journalists and to their listeners. They said that private electronic media have existed in Poland 16 years and are one of the basic achievements of democracy. Earlier, under the PRL, there was a state monopoly, censorship and party propaganda. They are sure that a return to those times is not possible by either the Government as well as the radio and television stations and internet portals. http://www.zw.com.pl/zw2/index.jsp?place=Lead04&news_cat_id=16&news_id=151042&layout=1&forum_id=27074&page=text">See in Polish

The media in Poland are defiant. Many are refusing to comply with the new vetting law. They are digging in their heels and refusing to get verification that they did not work with the secret services.

Kaczynski says he does not want a war with the media.
