Did Poland's Samoobrona Change Its Standards With Polish Coalition?
Warsaw, Poland 15 March, 2007 Politics in Eastern Europe, and Poland in particular, has generally been about power, cars, sex, corruption and using the system to make a few million while in power. Did the Polish political party Samoobrona change its standards when it formed a coalition government with the Law and Justice Party?
The Law and Justice party has changed politics. Now Polish politics is all about destroying people, institutions and anything that the Government doesn't like. And to the mix has been added a large dose of unmitigated hatred.
It would have been so much easier for Samoobrona to deal publicly with a group that made up of people like some of those in the Miller government. If what the Law and Justice party used to say when they were not in control of the government is true, Samoobrona and Miller's government were doing all sorts of bad things secretly anyway. They could have simply continued the way it was, if it was that way.
Now Samoobrona has the cars, the power. And some say, unproven allegations of course, they have their share of corruption and sex. But look what they have to put up with.
They have a virtuous Prime Minister that says, "No! No! No! Do it to me again!" every time they want something.
And to be able to do it to him again, they have to put up with the daily dose of hatred and ridicule being heaped on someone.
It would be so much easier if things went back to the old ways when there was just a lot of corruption and the media was ignored when its members pointed out who was the latest beneficiary of something not ordinarily available without a little grease applied here or there.
Let's be honest about it. Corruption does have its advantages. You can at least be sure that you have a deal and you don't have to worry about some honest person stopping something shady just because you are not following the rules.
But Samoobrona may have been short cars so they hooked up with the Terminators of the Third Republic and got enough cars to keep their boys happy with their toys.
To keep their sanity, however, they probably learned the words to that famous American marching song, sung to the tune of "Stars and Stripes Forever", "Be kind to your web-footed friends, for a duck may be somebody's mother…." (If you don't know the song, go here.)
But it may have been a step down for them to have to associate with the people that they are associating now. It might have been nicer to work the old way and just be corrupt, get sex, money, power and prestige without having to put up with hatred and destruction.
