Will Poland Trade Visas For Missile Bases?
Warsaw, Poland 2 February 2007 With polls showing a majority of Polish people against missile bases in Poland, will the Polish Government placate them by negotiating a trade of eased visa restrictions for missile bases?
This issue of visa's for Poles to the US is highly emotional. Any discussion with a Polish person of the reasons for the restrictions gets nowhere.
The issue of the missile bases is not yet as emotional, but there is deep seated opinion against them.
The current government criticized the previous for not getting enough in return for Poland's support of the US in Iraq. In spite of public opinion against continued involvement, the Government continues its support since there is a economic consideration involved.. So the Government has shown that it is willing to go against public opinion when it sees advantages for the country.
The Polish Government can claim a big victory and show strength by getting its way on the visas. The settlement can be justified in that no previous government has been able to make much progress on the visa issue.
As for the bases, the Government likely sees the economic benefits to having the bases there. And it surely sees that if the bases are there it is going to have the full force and might of the US defending them, and along with them, Poland.
The bases will also give continuing leverage to Poland in any future negotiations on any topic.
It is not likely that this Government will simply agree to the bases since it will look weak. So they will demand something in return.
Will it be the visas that are so wanted by the people?
