Polish Government Make Polish Kielbasa Look Unsanitary

Classified Polnews

Warsaw, Poland 22 January 2007 - The Polish Government has turned good Polish Kielbasa into a media fiasco for Polish producers.

Russian Ambassador to Germany Vladimir Kotenev said the issue of Russia’s embargo on Polish meat supplies was “extremely and deliberately politicized.” “Kotenev (also) said the ban targeted not so much Polish meat as low-quality meat products made in third countries and exported to Russia via Poland.” href="http://www.tass.ru/eng/level2.html?NewsID=11172939&PageNum=0 See ITAR-TASS

But you would not know that from reading the press and watching TV reports.

The problem that the Polish Government has to solve is the problem addressed by the Russian Ambassador. Poland must get control of the false veterinary certificates and fraudulent export controls that are underlying the problem.

But the Polish Government has chosen to blame Russia and not to address the problem.

That is a refreshing change anyway, because they normally blame everything on the opposition party Civic Platform.

The result has been a lot of negative publicity for Polish meat producers instead of negative publicity for the Minister of Agriculture who should be taking responsibility for failures in the control of veterinary certificates.

What is going to happen? “EU and Russian veterinary specialists will jointly inspect Polish meat processing factories, Vice Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Andrzej Lepper said on Saturday.” http://www.tass.ru/eng/level2.html?NewsID=11172939&PageNum=0 See ITAR-TASS

Apparently there will be no short-term resolution to the matter. The talks and inspections may take a year because the whole affair has become politicized. http://www.kommersant.com/p735631/Poland_Meat_Exports_Talks See Poland Meat Exports

That probably does not concern Poland so much because it is not losing much money because of the ban.

But it does have a convenient whipping boy in Russia to cover its own shortcomings
