Classified Polnews
Warsaw, Poland 10 January, 2007. The Capital of Poland, Warsaw, will have organized News Years celebrations next year.
The new President of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Walcz has already ordered the planning for next year. Under the control of the Law And Justice Party and the Kaczynskis, New Year's celebrations were cancelled. But this lead to uncontrolled celebrations in Warsaw's Old Town and many injuries and fights.
In Wroclaw and Krakow where the cities held huge organized events, the people were kept occupied with watching the stages and there were very few injuries and problems as compared to Warsaw. Warsaw's new President assumed her position in December and tried to organize celebrations for 1 January 2007.
But it takes a minimum of 30 days to get the required permits. So she was unable to have an organized event and, instead, positioned ambulances and medical services around the Old Town to provide on the spot medical treatment. It was reported that there was a steady stream of people going to these first aid stations on wheels.
Advance placement of the ambulances and adding police on the ground are credited with minimizing the effects of what could have turned out to be a very bad situation. Commentators are remarking that this is a vivid example of forward thinking and planning that was missing under the Law And Justice Party.
Whereas the Law And Justice Party was looking backward and trying to find problems, the new administration under the Civic Platform is looking forward and trying to find solutions. What the events next year will be have not yet been determined. But there will be a celebration
