Will Warsaw, Poland’s President Be Removed From Office?
Classified Polnews
Warsaw, Poland 22 January 2007 Because she filed her husbands financial disclosure two days late, Poland’s Warsaw President Hanna Gronkiewicz-Walc is subject to lose her mandate under the latest election law.
She is not the only official in this situation. Others around the country have failed to file financial statements on time. But she is high profile and her situation has caught the country’s attention.
The law that is causing her grief is in conflict with another law that stands and it might not be constitutional.
How the law will be applied and who will apply it, if it is applied at all, is open to question.
The issue has become a political hot potato. Suddenly the law and its application will be reviewed by various committees and the Polish Government.
Jan Rokita of the Civic Platform says that the law is bad. No law should be able to overturn the democratic vote of the Polish people. He thinks that it should be reviewed by the Constitutional Tribunal.
When or if anything will happen is an open question with no politician willing to make any firm predictions.
