Classified Polnews
Warsaw, Poland 26 January, 2007 - The battle over the right of Warsaw, Poland's President to stay in office has degenerated into Poland's Prime Minister Lech Kaczynski considering the use of force to remove the newly elected Hanna Gronkiewicz-Walcz. He immediately drew fire from Polish Government Opposition party leader Donald Tusk that who said that force would be resisted with force.
There are over 700 officials around Poland who failed to meet a 30 day deadline to file their financial statements.
Kaczynski claims that they have lost their mandates to govern and that new elections are to be held.
Tusk says that it is up to the courts to decide.
A leading business newspaper says, "Politicians' call for renewed elections is a disgrace - A shame to the idea of local authorities, the rule of law, Poland in the world." http://www.pulsbiznesu.pl/news,145,4a378077-37da-4d73-9095-f2895c4bf1da.aspx
The governing law is a hastily passed election law that includes a requirement for filing the financial statements; a requirement that was added with the intent of combatting corruption.
Constitutional experts say that the law should be looked at with the intent in mind and that being two days late on filing does not indicate corruption.
Kaczynski says the law is the law and talks about using force to clear the Warsaw President's office of Gronkiewicz-Walcz. He asked what are the elected officials hiding in the offices that they don't want to leave.
The threats of force have gotten the county's attention. In an attempt to defuse the crisis, Donald Tusk is scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister today. It is the first meeting between the two in over a year.
