Former Polish PM Marcinkiewicz Criticizes Balcerowicz

Warsaw, Poland 13 January 2007 Poland's former Prime Minister, Kaszimierz Marcinkiewicz, has stepped back into politics and, on his blog, criticised the former President of Poland's Central Bank, Leszek Balcerowicz, for Balcerowicz refusal to help Marcinkiewicz form a coalition between the Law and Justice Party and Civic Platform. He accused Balcerowicz of engaging in politics while he was the President of the Central Bank.

Marcinkiewicz claims that Balcerowicz said that rather than formation of a coalition, it would be better for the Law and Justice party to fail and new elections be held.

Marcinkiewicz, as Prime Minister, was unable to form a coalition with the Civic Platform and the Law and Justice party finally settled for a tumultuous coalition with two minority parties, Samoobrona and League Of Polish Families.

Marcinkiewicz blog post also claims that Marcinkiewicz heard words from Balcerowicz that he later heard from Civic Platform members.

These examples show, according to Marcinkiewicz, that Balcerowicz was engaged in politics while he was President of the Central Bank.

Politicians and commentators are expressing surprise that Marcinkiewicz is now practicing politics from his position as President of Bank PKO BP.

And he is being criticised himself, as a failed Prime Minister who went on to take a political appointment as administrator of Warsaw and who subsequently lost his election bid to be the President of Warsaw,for engaging in politics.

And now after a political appointment to his current position, he, a loser, criticises Balcerowicz a year after Balcerowicz's purported comments.

Some see it as a move orchestrated by one of the Kaczynski brothers to show that there is a precedent for the new head of the Central Bank to engage in politics.

Marcinkiewicz was not available for comment today. Balcerowicz would not comment.
