Polish Government Fiddles Away Its People

Classified Polnews

Warsaw, Poland December 27, 2006. Poles continue to emigrate from Poland to Western European countries. Recent data indicates that the emigration from Poland will continue. And in spite of the labor shortages caused by emigration, the Polish Government fiddles and hopes that emigration will eventually benefit the country.

No reliable figures exist as to the numbers that have actually left the country to date. The number 1 million is most often used. Some have estimated 2 million and more have left the country.

Emigration will continue. According to recent data more than 50% of the people in the 18 to 24 age bracket want to emigrate from Poland. http://www.polskieradio.pl/polonia/article.asp?tId=46384&j=2 The Government hopes that these people will return to Poland with money and start businesses. It also hopes that they will learn things in the West and bring that knowledge back to Poland.

But the Government is not giving these people any reason to return. And without the Government making changes that will cause people to return, why should they come back to Poland?

As it stands people can make 5 to 10 times the money in the West than they can make in Poland. Why should the Government assume that the young people will want to come back to the towns that they left because of no job opportunities and low pay. Why should they come back to start a business in a business unfriendly country?

Rather than starting a business, they can invest that money in real estate in Poland and become foreign landlords. Their money will work for them without the hassle of having to put up with government bureaucrats.

The longer the people live in the West and see the benefits of living there as compared to of living in Poland, the less likely it is for them to come back to Poland. And some of women who go West will eventually marry and make a new home in the West.

Young, unemployed people go West, earn money and come back to Poland to party. They are a source of new money to be spent in Poland.

So the government fiddles and is happy to see people taken from the unemployment rolls and reports that unemployment is going down. It is also happy to see potential troublemakers head west for opportunity. Some even say that the Government is happy to see people leave the country because it has eliminated the possibility of social unrest. http://www.polskieradio.pl/

At the same time Poland lacks construction workers people to work on the farms. It is to the point that even the farmers are asking the Government to change the tax laws to encourage people to take jobs harvesting crops.

The Government's solution is to open Poland's labor market to people from the East.

So low pay jobs will be offered to people from the East. It seems likely that Polish people will go West rather than compete for low pay with Easterners. What would make them want to compete?

What does the Government see that the people going West do not see? Why should they come back to compete for low paying jobs? Why should they come back at all?
