Will visas for Polish people to US help or hurt Poland?

Classified Polnews

Warsaw, Poland December 22, 2006. Once again there are efforts being made in United States to loosen the visa rules so that more Polish people may visit the United States. If the visa rules are loosened there is sure to be joy and jubilation in Poland. But will it be good for Poland?

During the negotiations of the treaty for Poland to join the European Union, Poland took the position that there would not be a mass exodus of people into the Western European labor market. Poland objected to the restrictions placed upon Polish workers working in European Union countries.

Poland presented facts and figures to show that Polish workers did not want to emigrate West. Anecdotal evidence showed otherwise and the West European countries knew what would happen. And emigration West boomed and continues to boom.

As one looks as the issue of visas for Poles to the US one hears that there are not many Poles who are interested in emigrating to the United States. And just like the period during the work up to the European Union treaty, anecdotal evidence shows that there are Poles who are interested in going to the US to work.

The emigration of Polish people to Western European countries has apparently helped the economy of some of the recipient countries. But it has definitely harmed the Po;Polish qualified labor market. There are labour shortages in sectors to the such a degree that Poland is looking at opening its market to laborers from the East.

Should the Polish people be given the opportunity to go to the US, the US will probably benefit as the US has always been benefited by importing the talent from countries all over the world. And given the record of the US emigration services on policing people who overstay their visas, it is likely that there will be a good number of people who will do just that and add their talent to the US Labor pool in spite of the emigration laws.

As far as Poland is concerned, the United States will become another place that will be taking the young and talented from Poland. Poland will to have to import more labour from the East.

It will eventually come to pass that the visa rules to the US are changed and Poland will see another brain drain. And the US will gain a lot more talent in the process.

This can not be a benefit to Poland.

Will they come back to Poland? Dream on.
