Polish Prime Minister compared to a fisherman

Classified Polnews

Warsaw, Poland December 4, 2006. Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski was compared to a fisherman who dangled the bait, caught his fish and then ate it. According to Polish political party Civic Platform member Broniskaw Komorowski, he is dangling bait to Polish opposition politician Jan Rokita and, if he catches Rokita, he will consume him like the hors d'oeuvres that he has already enjoyed.

The hors d'oeuvres referred to are likely to Poland's political party leaders Andrzej Lepper and Roman Giertych is. Both took Kaczynski’s bait and joined his government. Kaczynski out maneuvered them and now they are totally dependent on Kaczynski.

Kaczynski wants Rokita next.

Kaczynski has held grudge against Rokita for years and recently accused Rokita of committing a crime worse than murder. See Governing Poland Based On A Grudge. See. That crime was knowing about or having some involvement in spying on the right during the 1990’s. But suddenly it does not seem important to Kaczynski.

It is well known that Rokita has his own designs on being the Prime Minister of Poland. So some analysts say that Rokita needs his current political party, the Civic Platform, as much as Civic Platform needs Rokita.

But that has not stopped Rokita from talking to Law and Justice Party. And it has not stopped at the Law and Justice Party from making many public offers to Jan Rokita to leave the Civic Platform and enjoy the benefits of being part of the government.

Some question whether the public pronouncements by the Law and Justice Party are nothing more than political strategy to create dissension within the Civic Platform. This would fit with the Kaczynski longtime preferred strategy of tripping an opponent.

And it may part of some strategy to hurt Rokita for his alleged involvement in spying.

How serious Kaczynski is in providing a government position for Rokita is open to question. Both coalition partners Andrzej Lepper and Roman Giertych basically told Kaczynski that if Rokita comes to the government, they leave the government. That's an option that Kaczynski may not be able to live with.

In the end, however, after meeting with Kaczynski yesterday, Rokita said that he was opposed to the current government’s policies and could not join a government that he opposed. The big fish did not take the bait.
