Polish Budget Irresponsible - Balcerowicz

Warsaw, Poland September 28, 2006 . The President of the National Bank of Poland, Leszek Balcerowicz, criticized the new budget put forth by the Polish government for 2007 and said that it is irresponsible and lacking in solutions.
Since the current Polish government took over the rule of the country after the fall elections in 2005, the Polish Ministry of Finance has been in constant turmoil at the top. There have been a series of finance ministers appointed, discharged and reappointed with the latest Minister of Finance being Zyta Gilowska.
Zyta Gilowska had prepared a budget. But she was discharged when she was accused of having lied on her vetting statement. In her absence many of the provisions that she had included in the budget or discarded and a new budget based on different principles drafted.
After being cleared of the charges against her, she was reappointed as Minister of Finance. But even though she is now the Minister of Finance, the budget that is being presented to the Polish Parliament for approval is not the budget that she created. It is someone else's work.
The Polish Government has been attacking Leszek Balcerowicz for months. It would appear that today it was payback time as he rendered his judgment on the offering of the Polish Government.
Leszek Balcerowicz is very well respected by the financial community by the Polish and international financial communities. His opinion of the budget is expected to have a great deal of influence on the opinions finally rendered by these people.
