The Polish politics of personal destruction leave few untouched
Warsaw, Poland August 30, 2006. Since the fall elections of 2005 in Poland the Polish government has been on a quest to destroy the elusive evil network of people that it thinks ran the country since 1989. The process has involved the destruction of the reputations of many of Poland's prominent people. And unfounded attacks have been made on some of the most respected people in Poland.
The attacks started during Poland's presidential campaign in 2005. Accusations were made against the father of the then presidential candidate, Donald Tusk, concerning his service in the German Army. The accuser was temporarily removed from this position but later restored in a process that showed that his home Polish political party, Law and Justice, approved of what he did.
Since that time there is a long list of people who have been attacked for one reason or another.
Yesterday, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacek_Kuro%C5%84" , now deceased, one of the most respected and trusted men who took part in the Solidarity movement and overthrow of the Communist regime, was subjected to a smear campaign launched by someone who released partial data that indicated that during the times of the revolution Jacek Kuron met with members of the Communist secret services.
Former President Lech Walesa quickly came to the defense of Jacek Kuron. He indicated that he had given people working with him the authority to discuss things with the secret services and other people in the Communist regime in order to find a way forward. He credited the efforts of Jacek Kuron to the organization of the famous roundtable meeting between Solidarity and the Communists.
This attack on Jacek Kuron follows the accusations by a member of the Polish government that the majority of its former Ministers of Foreign Affairs were agents of the Soviet Union. http://www.polskieradio.pl/polonia/article.asp?tId=40899&j=2
Even though no evidence was able to be brought forward indicating that the former Ministers of Foreign affair where agents of anyone, the Polish government issued only a hand slap to the senior government official who made the charges. It has made no steps towards making an apology to these people.
The attacks and accusations against people in Poland have reached such a crescendo that a TV commentator remarked that if you are anyone of importance who has not yet been subjected to a slanderous personal attack, do not let anyone know that.
More is at Will Poland be rebuilt or will it be destroyed?
